Extracororeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT)

Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) is a non-invasive treatment that can be used to treat chronic tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, and other musculoskeletal conditions. ESWT was originally developed to treat kidney stones and gallstones and has been successfully used for over two decades.

Shockwave therapy accelerates the body’s healing process, speeding up the recovery of injured joints and tissue and reduce pain and discomfort. Depending on the type of injury treated, ESWT can produce focused shockwaves or radial pressure waves, both are successful treatments in their own ways and can be done outpatient. Each may require several treatments, depending on the patient’s specific condition.
Focused shockwave treatment is used to target affected areas through the ESWT machine using low energy impulses. The patient lies down and the doctor applies a gel to the affected area, which helps to deliver the impulses deeper into the skin. This treatment usually lasts between 5 to 15 minutes, and most feel no discomfort during the process, other than the pressure of the shockwave instrument pressing against the affected area. Radial shockwave treatment is delivered the same way; however the shockwave dissipates once they are discharged and contact the skin. Focused shockwaves are higher energy, so they don’t dissipate on contact. Radial shockwaves are useful in some instances, however focused shockwaves allow higher levels of energy to be sent into deeper tissue locations.
Once ESWT treatment has been given, patients should limit their physical activity for at least two weeks. The process may take multiple treatments depending on the patient’s specific condition.
